U13 Stimpson Cyclones vs U13 Mixed Navy, Valleys

The final match of the season had us on tenterhooks from start to finish!

Valleys won the toss and elected to bowl. Both teams agreed to play the full 26 overs to give the kids a proper send-off for the season. With the slow rugby grass outfield making runs hard to come by, our batters knew they were in for a long, hot morning at the crease.

Two of our brave girls stepped up to open, and as expected, runs were slow. Valleys helped with a few extras, allowing the scoreboard to tick over. Both batters aimed to retire but were dismissed in the 8th and 9th overs, falling just short. The new bowler from Valleys tightened things up with a maiden, but our batters responded quickly, racking up 11 runs in the next two overs, including the first four of the match. Before long, two batters retired, making way for fresh legs. The new pair played patiently and accurately, averaging five runs an over, guiding us to 2-77. Another batter retired as we approached the final overs. A sharp piece of bowling from Valleys claimed our next wicket. The last pair stood firm, adding one more run before the 26 overs were completed, leaving us with a strong total of 3-82.

With a slow field making boundaries rare, we knew this game could be decided by bowling discipline. Our bowlers set the tone quickly with just two runs conceded in the first two overs. Extras crept in during the third over, but a pinpoint delivery earned us the first wicket—LBW!

Our spinners took over, delivering three tight overs, including a maiden. Valleys fought back with a four and some singles, reaching 1-22 before some more of our pace bowlers headed in. The pressure paid off, with wickets falling in the 12th and 14th overs, moving Valleys to 4-43 just after the halfway mark. Then came the moment of the match - our new bowler, also earning a wicket, after an absolutely incredible one handed catch from in the field that sent up a cheer heard by players over on the neighbouring field! Three balls into the next over, another Valley batter was sent packing, and the momentum was in our favour.

Valleys dug in, adding 16 runs over the next four overs, but a bowling change saw another batter dismissed. Two more wickets followed in the next two overs, including a maiden wicket, leaving Valleys at 8-66 with 17 runs needed from the last 18 balls. The tension was sky-high. Overs 23 and 24 saw Valleys inch closer, scoring 2 and 5 runs, bringing the equation to 10 runs off the final over. The Valleys batters threw everything at it, scrambling for 1, 2, 1, 1, and another 2—leaving them needing 2 runs off the final ball to tie the match.

The last delivery came in, struck cleanly, and the batters sprinted for two. The Cyclones fielders hustled, the captain seized the ball, and with everything on the line, raced back to the stumps, beating the batter to complete a thrilling run-out! After an intense, heart-stopping finish, Cyclones won by just 2 runs! A fantastic way to end the season, with every player giving their all in an unforgettable match.

U14 vs. North Lakes Blue.

In our final game being a one-dayer, cyclones won the toss and elected to bowl first. North Lakes got off to a solid start until Jesse and Zac took wickets in consecutive overs. Connor followed up his fiffer with another wicket today as well as being involved in a runout. Returning back to bowl his second spell, Luke took 2 wickets to slow down The Lakes scoring but they had posted a daunting 175 off their 26 overs. The Cyclones lost a few wickets early and at 4/67 looked in trouble. Travis and Jesse then combined for an unbeaten 90 run partnership which seen Travis retire on 68. Jesse batted brilliantly falling just 3 shy of his maiden half century. His knock of 47 off 44 balls had us right back in the match. Edging closer to victory, the Lakes managed to take 5 wickets in quick succession. Needing 7 off their last over with 1 wicket in hand, Travis was the last batsmen dismissed for 72 leaving the boys agonisingly 1 run shy of their target. An entertaining game to watch to round out the season.
